Mingara Athletics Club Inc.

"Hooper Cup" Champions

Country Champs 2015

Masters Women Top Pointscore Club Championships 2015

GOOD SPORTS CLUB OF THE YEAR 2014

Mingara has won the overall pointscore trophy "The Hoopers Cup"!!
at Athletics NSW Country Championships Glendale Jan 2015.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of our athletes who competed at Country Champs!

We finished on 900pts and 172 pts ahead of Nowra Athletics Club.

This trophy was won for many years by Gosford Athletics Club and it is an honor to have won it and bring it back to the Coast.

Two meeting records achieved: Nicky Kelly womens 40-49 800m and George Papalexion mens 40-49 Long Jump

Our first meet back of 2015 was a hot and humid one but that didn’t stop us getting some great times on the track. In the 60m, Mingara Athletics club member Ernie Leseberg was in fine form running a 7.22. Newcomer Tyson Vanderwolf ran the second fastest time of the day with 7.29. Nick Papalexion and Brett Reid also broke the 8 second mark with 7.64 and 7.88. The ladies almost broke the 8 second mark with State Champion Triple Jumper Bethany Kranendonk running a very quick 8.03. Sydney runner Annie Gardiner is back in form running 8.38 and masters champion sprinter Richelle Ingram ran 8.48, still in form after her medal sweep at the Pan Pacific Masters games on the Gold Coast in November.

In the 400m, Saturday saw quite a few new PB’s for the men. Terrigal local Nick Martinlead the field and finished with a 52.92. All schools state champion 800m runner Matt Scarr was hot on his tail and ran a PB of 53.50. Theo Mihellis and Nick Papalexion also both ran season bests with Theo just beating his uncle Nick with 54.79 and Nick running 55.47. The ladies all chased past state and national All Schools 400m and 800m championBess Chippendale who ran 1.01.18. Not far behind was Pan Pacific Masters Games 800m & 1500m gold medal winner Nicky Kelly with 1.03.30. Newcomer this season Jacqui O’Neill has improved out of sight to be chasing the girls and running a PB of 1.04.34.

The 1000m saw a very talented field running with fast times clocked considering the heat. The race was won by another school champion Terry Mihellis in 3.04.57. Up and comerZac Martin stayed with him all the way to finished just behind on 3.07.06. First girl across the line was the multi-talented youngster Allanah Pitcher in 3.25.63. After just completing her HSC, Zoe Duffin-Pruksopun is finding her form again finishing in 3.30.30. Sophie Lanealso deserves a mention with her third fastest female time of 3.43.14 and shows that persistence and hard training gets results.

In the shot put, another Pan Pacific Masters gold medalist Vicki Townsend beat all the men to throw 10.81m. Coming in second for the girls was our local Commonwealth Games starRae Anderson throwing 7.51m. Geoff Crumption out threw the other men with a 9.82m, but not far behind was champion jump and throw coach Matt Horsnell showing how to do it with a 9.20m throw.

Most teams in the women’s race elected to run the lead athlete on the first leg. A strong pack including NSW cross country champion Chloe Tighe (Kembla
Joggers), 4:11 1500m runner, Bridey Delaney (St George), Belinda Martin (St George) running in her masters team and Kate Spencer (Ryde) running for her under-20 team, tore around the two laps of the 2km course. Nothing separated them until the change-over was in sight. At the exchange Delany led Spencer and Tighe by just a few seconds, changing in 13:09, 13:12 and 13:14 respectively, with Martin next on 13:26.
The race favourites Sydney University opted to run teenager Jenny Blundell, just back from Europe where she ran a 9:46 3000m on the track, as the lead-off
runner. Blundell ran a strong leg of 13:44 to keep her team well in touch.
Teams: St George 13:09, Kembla Joggers 13:14, Sydney Uni 13:44, UTS Norths 14:30, Athletics Easts 15:48, Bankstown 15:54

Leg 2

Sydney Uni’s Eliza Barton clocked 13:52, gradually taking her team into the lead, a position they would not surrender for the remainder of the race. Barton took about 3km to pass the leader, tiny Kembla Jogger’s Sian Fennell, who had celebrated her 12th birthday earlier in the week. Fennell ran a most courageous leg of 14:46, keeping her team nearly a minute ahead of third placed UTS Norths. Running a strong leg for UTS Norths was Trychelle Kingdom, the former World Junior Championship medallist from Turlinjah on the NSW South Coast and now living in Sydney. She ran her team’s fastest leg of 14:26.
Teams: Sydney Uni 27:36, Kembla Joggers 28:00, UTS Norths 28:56, St George 31:22, Athletics East 31:31, Athletics East B 32:44

Leg 3

Melinda Witchard (14:29 leg) maintained the lead for Sydney Uni, while Gunnedah’s Megan Isbester kept Kembla Joggers in a strong second, with Emily Augustine, 15, keeping UTS Norths in touch with a time of 14:39.
Teams: Sydney Uni 42:05, Kembla Joggers 42:45, UTS Norths 43:35, Athletics Easts 47:06,Hills 47.24, St George 47:27, A thletics  East B 32:44

Leg 4

With former national steeplechase champion Milly Clark on duty for Sydney University on the anchor leg they were a safe bet for victory. Clark extended their lead to more than two minutes, clocking 13:24. Kembla Joggers finished second with former state champion Lorraine Hince bring them home ahead of UTS Norths’ Beth Croft in third. Belinda Martin (STG) ran her second leg of the day, taking her open team from sixth to fourth with a time of 13:57.
Teams: Sydney Uni  55:29, Kembla Joggers 57:41, UTS Norths 58:50, St George 61:24, Athletics East 63:15, Hills 65.46
Fastest legs: Delaney 13:09, Tighe 13:14, Clark 13:24, Blundell 13:44, Barton 13:52, Martin 13:57 (13:26 in the masters event), Kingdom 13:26, Witchard 14:29,
Charlotte Wilson (UTS Norths) 14:30, Augustine 14:39, Johanna Parson (Hills) 14:43 Isbester 14:45, Fennell 14:46
Kembla Joggers’ Chloe Tighe was delighted with her team’s silver medal. ”As the first runner I found it quite tough with a fast pace throughout the first few kilometres,’’ she said. ``We had a few very young girls in our team who ran fantastically well. It was great to be involved in the relay.”

UNDER-20 FEMALE (4x4km)

After Kate Spencer ran a very fast first leg of 13:12, the other teams were locked in chase mode. Sydney Striders caught Ryde on the third led and changed over 30 seconds in front, but Ryde still had Georgia Winkcup, state steeplechase medallist still to run. Winkcup ran a strong leg to bring her team home in first place.

UNDER-18 FEMALE (4x4km)

This was a close battle with 23 seconds separating the medallists. National steeplechase medallist Hanna Gibson(Sydney Striders) led the race early but more consistent legs from Westfields, Hills and UTS Norths brought them into contention. At start of the final leg UTS Norths led Westfields and Hills, but Westfields stormed home with Andrea Lamas running 7:27 to take her team to gold, with Hills second and UTS Norths third.

Fastest legs: Gibson 6:47, Nell Breslin (UTS Norths) 7:00, Erin Blundell (Cherrybrook) 7:12, Sarah Marvin (Hills) 7:14.

UNDER-16 FEMALE (4x4km)

Mixing it with the boys on the first leg was the very talented Chloe Walters (Macquarie Hunter) who gave her team a good lead. But Randwick Botany were never far behind and on the second leg took the lead. It came down to a close sprint finish between Australian All Schools 1500m champion Rose Davies (MQH) and Georgia Evans (RBH) with Davies across the line first in 2714, ahead of Botany in 27:19.

Fastest Legs: Walters 6:22, Davies 6:23, Amy Harding-Delooze (Randwick Botany) 6:39, Manon Wilson (Randwick Botany) 6:41, Hannah Preeo (Kembla Joggers) 6:52, Evans 6:55, Catherine Miller (Asics Wests) 6:58

35+  FEMALE (4x4km)

Courtesy of a tremendous first leg of 13:26 by Belinda Martin, St George were never in danger of defeat, finishing the race in a time of 60:46, nearly six minutes ahead of runner up Mingara (66:42). Martin was ably supported by Karen Stanley (15:37), Suzanne Harrington (15:25) and Robyn Basman (16:18).

45+  FEMALE (4x4km)

The first leg run of 14:41 by former state open champion Lorraine Hince, set up her team, Kembla Joggers, for a comfortable win in the 45+ years race. Three consistent legs in the 17 minutes region by Janice HendersonSue Flynn and Patricia O’Dea supported Hince. Second were Hills anchored by Linda Gard in the team’s fastest leg of 16:35.

55+  FEMALE (4x4km)

Bankstown enjoyed one of the comfortable wins of the day, taking the 55+ years race by more than 10 minutes. Anchor runner Mary Sheehan ran the event’s fastest split of 17:03.

Other state champions were:
U14 female KEJ 32:23
U12 female MQH 30:07

Close tassels highlight 64th NSW Road Relay Championships as Botany claimed eighth consecutive men’s title

The story of 64th NSW Road Relay Championships, held in perfect conditions on the Central Coast, was the number of very close team battles which went down to the wire. In one race 23 seconds separated the medallist, in another 12 seconds was the difference between gold and silver, while in the under-16 men, Kembla Joggers and Macquarie Hunter hit the line together, both given the same time after eight kilometres of running by eight athletes.

The Mingara club’s Margaret and Robert Beardslee were the perfect hosts of the event held on a 2km circuit around the Central Coast campus of Newcastle University. With no wind and 20 degree temperatures it was a superb winter’s day for running.

OPEN MALE (4x4km)

Randwick Botany were favoured to win their eighth consecutive men’s title and they brought a strong team up the F2 to continue their winning streak.

Leg 1

UTS Norths were off to the best start with in-form James Connor leading comfortably over the first leg clocking 11:45. Former schoolboys star, now 32, Ben Liddy ran above expectations for Sydney University changing over second in 11:50. St George, who are enjoying one of their better years, were third, courtesy of Tim Page’s 12:01 split. He was followed by Brad Woods (Bankstown) 12:09. State cross country bronze medallist Brad Milosevic (Girraween) ran 12:14, just two seconds ahead of his boss at Oakley Randwick Botany’s Liam Ridings on 12:16.
Teams: UTN 11:45, SYU 11:50, STG 12:01, BAN 12:09, GIR 12:14, RBH 12:16

Leg 2

Former junior steeplechase star Dylan Dudley kept UTS Norths in the lead by 10 seconds with a terrific leg clocked at 12:05 but Randwick Botany were threatening with 17-year-old Jack Stapleton running a storming leg of 11:54.

“Liam got us away well and we were in sixth,” Stapleton said. “I tried to get us up as far as I could and take as much distance off Dylan Dudley as I could and give Matt Cole, our third runner, a helping hand.

“I have not raced in a while so it was good to have a run before the All Schools Cross Country next week. It was a good hit out.”

The Randwick Botany team entirely comprised members of Ken Green’s training squad.

“It was good to have virtually the whole squad there, as we all know each other well and it was a good atmosphere and I enjoy running with them.”
Teams: UTN 23:50, RBH 24:10, STG 24:34, SYU 24:49

Leg 3

The race closed up on Leg 3 with Sydney Uni’s former World Cross Country representative Hugh Williams running a quick 12:04 leg as the three leading teams were now within 30 seconds. Former Victorian and World Youth Championship representative Matt Cole moved Randwick Botany into the lead with a strong leg clocked at 12:13. UTS Norths club president and masters national champion Frazer Dowling, 33, held UTS Norths in second with a 12:52 run.
Williams was happy with his run. “I felt good and really strong and didn’t feel tired on the hill on the back of the course,” he said. “I wanted to start strong on the first lap going into that hill. It is where a lot of time can be made up. I managed to pull back Geoff (Arnold, St George team) fairly early on and earlier than I expected. The main idea was not to hammer it through the start/finish area so I could make sure I could go again on the hill (on the second lap).
Williams had closed the gap on second placed UTS Norths.
“I nearly caught Frazer (Dowling). I really wanted to catch him as he gave me some banter before the race, so it would have been good, but unfortunately it didn’t happen.”
Things continue to progress well for Williams who is a regular state medallist on the road, on the track and over cross country.
“It is a step in the right direction. After two weeks of exams I was a zombie. Nowra (State Cross Country Champs) was in the middle of that and I ran terribly – there is no other way to put it. Gold Coast (10km) was an improvement and I started to find my grove this week. So it is a good build up towards the City to Surf and nationals.”
Teams: RBH 36:23, UTN 36:42, SYU 36:53, STG 37:57

Leg 4

With NSW Cross Country champion Ben Moreau anchoring the team, Randwick Botany comfortably took the race. Moreau clocked the day’s fastest leg of 11:33. Former state champion Russell Dessaix-Chin ran a strong leg to take his team Sydney University into second while Alex Pettigrew brought UTS Norths home in third.
“We thought it would be quite close, I’d either have a small lead or a small gap to chase,” said Moreau. “But as it turned out we had a comfortable lead and I was under instructions to hit the first lap pretty hard and put it out of sight. So I did that, and on the second lap I thought actually this feels quite hard now. But really the job was done, before I took over and it was a great team effort.”
Moreau ran a personal best half marathon of 63:59 last week on the Gold Coast.
“I haven’t done any hard running this week. Doing 10 or 15 mile runs and I actually felt really good which I was surprised about as normally after a hard race like that you feel knackered for a while.”

FASTEST LEGS:

Moreau 11:33, Connor 11:45, Liddy 11:50, Matthew Cox (Bankstown) 11:58, Page 12:01, Williams 12:04, Dessaix-Chin (Bay to Bay 2013 winner) 12:04, Dudley 12:05, Woods 12:09, Cole 12:13, Milosevic 12:14, Ridings 12:16, Ben Toomey (St George) 12:16,

UNDER-20 MALE (4x4km)

It was a comfortable victory to Bankstown with former race walker Matthew Timson clocking the fastest leg of 12:57. Second was St George with Nathan Breen running the fastest leg of 13:33, a minute ahead of South Sydney.

UNDER-18 MALE (4x4km)

There was a tremendous race in the under-18 men’s event. The lead was traded throughout between two south coast clubs, Nowra and Kembla Joggers. The first leg was a classic match-up between two of NSW’s finest teenage distance runners Arron Spiessberger-Parke (NOW) and Alexander Seal (KEJ).  Spiessberger–Parke, who has enjoyed a tremendous 12 months where he won the 2012 NSW Road Championship and Short Course Cross Country Championship, followed up by a third in the national 3000m in March this year, clocked 12:20, the race’s fastest split. Seal, a place-getter in the national junior championships last March, was just seven seconds behind in 12:27. At the end of the second leg, Nowra still led, by just six seconds, but then extended the lead to 31 seconds on the third leg. On the final leg Joshua Kentwell ran a storming leg for Kembla Joggers to take them the victory by just 12 seconds with under-16 athlete Jye Edwards bringing home the silver medal for Nowra. Kentwell has just returned from national representation in the Oceania Championships. The Nowra team was filled by under-16 athletes with the Frank brothers, Jed and Gus, travelling from below Ulladulla to help the team to silver.

UNDER-16 MALE(4x2km)

This was one of the best races of the day and provided the closest finish with two teams, Kembla Joggers and Macquarie Hunter hitting the line together. Just 15
seconds separated the split times of all eight athletes in the two teams. Kembla Joggers were served well on the first leg with national 2000m steeplechase champion and 3000m champion, Liam Henderson clocking 6:09, the fastest split on the event, while Jesse Maxwell, national 800m medallist, was the lead-off runner for Macquaire Hunter. He was followed by national schools triathlon champion Caleb Agostini-Morrow while Joshua Head ran the second leg for Kembla Joggers. At the change-over the teams were separated by just nine and four seconds. It developed into a great race on the last leg.  Lorcan Redmond (MQH), who had run first leg for the under-14s team, fronted up to anchor the under-16 team after just 13 minutes rest and clocked 6:13. James Constance was the anchor for KJs, running a split of 6:17. Kembla Joggers received the nod from the judges ahead of Macquarie Hunter with both teams given the same time 25:10.

Fastest legs: Liam Henderson KEJ 6:09, Lorcan Redmond MQH 6:13, James Constance KEJ 6:17, Jesse Maxwell MQH 6:18, Caleb Agostini-Morrow MQH 6:18, Lachlan Cooper SSR 6:18, Scott Hamilton KEJ 6:20, Joshua Phillips SSR 6:20, Chris Fayers MQH 6:21, Joshua Head KEJ 6:24.

35+ MALE(4x4km)

It was a close race with a little more than a minute separating the medallists in the men’s 35+ years event. Sutherland’s Kevin Robertson clocked the fastest leg of 12:27, but there were some fine legs run by Andrew Cross(Sutherland, 12:41), Tom Highnam (Sydney Striders, 12:43), Richard Roberts (Asics Wests, 12:44) and Michael Doggett (Asics Wests, 12:51). Sutherland took the title in 52:16, with Sydney Striders second in 52:36 and Asics Wests third, 53:33.

45+ MALE(4x4km)

This was another close race with just 22 seconds between gold and silver. Hills took the title from St George while Sutherland third. St George led from the gun with the event’s fastest leg clocked by Jose Carvalho, 14:08. They held the lead for most of the race until Barry Mayo’s anchor leg of 14:24 brought Hills home in first.

55+ MALE(4x4km)

The 55+ years men’s race was a see-sawing affair. Nowra led after the first leg with Bankstown taking over on the second before Hills took the lead on the third which they held to the finish. Nowra were away well courtesy of the event’s fastest leg by Peter Dooley, 14:32. Bankstown’s Michael Mortimer took his club into the lead running 14:52 on the second leg. But over the later stages of the race the Hills team were unstoppable. The Hills anchor Dennis Wylie warmed up by running 14:47 on the third leg in the 45+years team and followed it up by running 14:38 leg in this race – the fastest by any athlete on the final leg.
“The 45+ and 55+ were in the same race so I ran the second leg of the 45s and that gave me 15 minutes rest until the next run,” said the self-coached Wylie. “I’ve been going well this season, no injuries, but I don’t overdo it and push too hard. If I start to feel a niggle I ease off.”

65+ MALE(4x4km)

Bankstown were comfortable winners in 70:59, ahead of a close battle for the minor medals between Hills (76:23) and Bankstown B team (76:54). Running for fourth placed St George Frank Scorzelli ran a stunning leg of 15:41, 88 seconds faster than the next best by Hills’ Stephen Napper. The Bankstown team was strong all round with three athletes clocking 17 minute legs. Also on the winning Bankstown team was Jim Harrison, father of multiple state and national champion Jamie Harrison.
